Windshield Crack Damage
What is it? When a rock or debris damages
your windshield in a small area, leaving a small area of the windshield
glass cracked. These small glass cracks can often run outward from
either end of the crack, completely ruining your auto´s Windshield.
Auto Glass Windshield Repair for Crack damage
When a crack develops in you auto´s windshield it can be
replaced if the crack is not too severe. Often cracks as long as
6 inches can be repaired without the need for a full Windshield
Replacement. Similar to Star
Damage Repair Windshield Repair involves injection of a special
resin into the damaged area using a tool that attaches directly
to the glass. Once injected, this resin is then cured and polished
to restore the clarity to the glass. When a crack occurs, it often
spreads into the windshield's inner layer of plastic, called Poly
Vinyl Butyral, or PVB, which is sandwiched between two layers of
glass. In some instances, a drill is used to make a clean passageway
to the plastic, where the resin is injected to repair the damage.
Windshield repair performs several functions; it prevents the damage
from spreading to the rest of the windshield, and the visual clarity
of the damaged area is improved, especially if the Auto Glass Repair
is made sooner than later before contaminants find their way into
the windshield and cannot be easily removed. Some also say that
the structural integrity of the windshield is improved, though no
publicly available tests are known to exist to support this claim.
The history of Windshield Crack Repair
Windshield Crack repair began prior to the 1970's when a small
number of early pioneers in the windshield Repair business experimented
with oil-based solutions that were poured into Windshield Cracks
that resulted in a cosmetic way to hide the break. It was in the
1970's when Auto Glass Repair really began to grow, led by Novus
and other companies, as more and more companies entered the business.
In the 1990's, we witnessed an explosion of volume as Belron grew
its Windshield Repair volume.
